Exotica 1994

Exotica - Atom Egoyan <3

I bought Exotica at the beginning of the month and to be honest I didn't know anything about the director I soon googled and was surprised on how many films and credits he was involved in. I suddenly became very interesting in the style he shoots and the equation of how he makes a film like his own personal structure. Many films I like have the most intimate and intriguing seductive tension that builds up in the most uncomfortable and desirable way. For instance Stoker is one of my favourite films the way Park-Chan-Wook builds up tension is uncomfortable and seems unattainable. You know the relationship between India and Uncle Charlie is wrong but you want them to be together and you want something to happen. The same as Mia Kershener's character Christina is intimate with several characters and how the relationships are all complicated and yet they thrive of excitement and you want to understand them.

Exotica- I'm writing about this film a few weeks after I actually watched it so I may forget a few things. There was a way Egoyan built tension up I can't specifically place my hand on it but as soon as tension would build up and you thought answers were appearing the film would relax and you would forget about them and was like one big vicious circle. Then at the end you were as just as confused and built up as the beginning and middle.

There were so many other beautiful aspects of the films the characters persona's and the way they would react to different situations the costumes were just so simple but perfection. Every scene was just exceptional and the neon colour palette throughout (like Wim Wenders in Paris, Texas' but then flashbacks with such neutral innocent palettes. I loved Christina's dance to Leonard Cohen.

I don't really like explains to much of the film but love to explain why I love it so much just the details the colours and things that make it so beautiful.

The story itself is so intricate and I'm guessing every time you open it up and watch it all the little secrets and details appear every time why the characters are the way they are. From Tracey and the way she asks such personal questions with out thought and the jealousy that drives Eric and Thomas's plans and desires everything about the movie is so hauntingly beautiful.
