'Down in the Valley' 2005

'Down in the Valley' -2005

I remember when I first watched this film and had an epiphany that this is what I wanted to happen in my life at this point in time and then finishing the film thinking okay kind of maybe not. I love the way this film was crafted its as if every little speckle of the film was poured with love and passion the colours the way it was film dialogue and of course can't forget the unforgettable soundtrack.

The plot revolves a teenage girl 'October' played by Evan-Rachel-Wood who meets a Edward Norton 'Harlon' a young man who thinks he embodies what it means to be a cowboy (basically everything he has seen in a spaghetti western) and both somewhat immediately fall for each other. At first its infatuation but later becomes a scary somewhat obsession.

I love the entire concept and although the younger girl falls for an older man Lolita-ish ordeal been used many times in movies its somewhat different in this portrayal as you end up seeing for what it really is instead of the rose tinted heart shape glasses that its glamourised to be.

With these two exceptional actors who really choose the fantastic films they are always in you can't really go wrong. Sometimes when I watch actors they don't embody what it means to be there characters but with these two you can always see that there immediate reactions are what they would be like in real life.

The soundtrack is incredible Mazzy Star, Peter Salett set the dried out summers of discontent and wild dangerous, magical experiences that truly happen in the summer.

I wish more people had seen this film because its so devastatingly beautiful and wild, has all the themes and concepts I love in a movie.

The director David Jacobson said his relationship with his sister echoed of that between the relationship of Tobe and Lonnie and the endless summer days of living around Sand Fernando Valley having nothing to do but wander walk and go to the cinema is also influenced the films setting.

One of my favourite scenes below. enjoy xx
