This Sci-Fi cult classic is a beautiful masterpiece. The film is about a man who loses all memories and believes he has committed these horrific murders that he keeps being blamed for. The story involves a mad scientist who tries to guide him and explain he's not going mad and that he has these special mind powers that these creatures called the 'Strangers' inhabit. The strangers want to brain wash people and create a whole parallel world forcing fake memories and identities within people and inhabit corpses bodies. The colour palette is by far one of the most hauntingly exquisite. The dark and luminous greens are a theme through out the film. Even one of the first scenes is set in a green bathroom (something I am obsessed with). Jennifer Connelly's green dress and the hallways tones. The costumes in 90's Sci-Fi's are very 1940's esque with a futuristic twist even in Ridley Scotts Blade runner Rachael's wardrobe too. I'm not going to talk about the film too much as Ive covered the plot basis and I want this segment to be very image, cinematography orientated.
The cinematography reminded me of Orson Welles 'The Third Man' the main character played by English actor Rufus Sewell also looked very similar to Orson Welles.
My mum recently had an assignment and she and to watch 1927 Metropolis and was a silent movie about the Dystopian future and noticed the similarities with the Strangers and the authoritative figure and crazy scientist. The director of 'Dark City' said the strangers looks were based upon the cross dress Rif Raf in 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'.
Similarities between Rufus and Orson.
My obsession with green bathrooms and colour schemes in cinema and this one is by far one of the most aesthetically pleasing.
Sci-Fi's 1940's reoccurring fashion with a futuristic twist, you can see it in the hair and costume and makeup palette above you can see Jennifer Connelly's character and Rachael from 'Blade Runner'.
Hope you liked this new segment I will be uploading a lot more frequently after this Wednesday as I have a film studies exam.
